The next morning, the first day of Fashion Week, Ivy arrived at Hotel LaFontaine with Monty straining at his leash, excited for another day of pampering. Élise was waiting at the employee’s entrance with Kiki tucked in her arms, the collar in her hand, and the USB stick safely stored inside.

“Are you ready?” Ivy asked.

“Non,” she said, rubbing Kiki’s head with a melancholy air. “I am not ready to say goodbye yet.”

“Why don’t we drop Monty off at the daycare first, before we see Inspector Clayburn?” Ivy suggested. “If you would like, we can take our own sweet time doing it to give you a little longer to say goodbye.”

“Merci,” Élise said tearfully, with a grateful smile.

As they ambled through the corridors to the hotel’s doggy daycare, Élise talked and crooned to Kiki in French while Ivy’s thoughts were focused on the murder. She hoped Inspector Clayburn would be able to use the files on the USB to pinpoint a possible suspect. If they really were stolen designs, then the killer could very well be the rightful owner of them. Or a prior victim of design theft.

Thinking of prior victims, Ivy caught sight of Inigo Rodrigo hurrying past her, his laptop clutched tightly to his chest as his eyes darted warily around. They met hers and narrowed with suspicion while she looked suspiciously back. She wished she could read his thoughts and see what he was thinking and hiding.

Soon enough, Monty had been dropped off, much to his enthusiasm, and they were on their way to the inspector.

“What do you think they will do with her?” Élise asked mournfully as she scratched Kiki behind one of her fluffy ears. “Do you think they will try to give her back to Adèle Verville?”

“I hope not, but they might. Adèle could turn them down, though.”

“What if she doesn’t? What if that horrid woman says she wants to keep her? ”

Ivy looped her arm around her friend’s shoulders. “I don’t think she will. We already know she doesn’t like Kiki, and once she finds out that her boyfriend was using their relationship to potentially steal and sell industry secrets, I can’t imagine she’ll want the sentimental reminder either.”

“That is likely true,” Élise agreed. Her chin became hard with determination. “But if she should want to keep Kiki, then I shall have to kidnap her, and rescue her from such a horrible fate.”

“And I’ll be sure to help,” Ivy promised. “I’m not a rule-breaker in general, but I’ll make an exception when it comes to rescuing dogs and helping friends.”

They were walking together, Ivy’s arm still around her shoulders when the sudden sound of racing footsteps erupted close behind them. Ivy turned in time to see the blur of an over-sized coat and a wide-brimmed hat as she was bowled head over heels to the ground. The breath whooshed out of her lungs and she lay on the tile, blinking and gasping as Élise’s scream pierced the air.
